The First World
Series was in 1903:
"The annual post-season competition in professional baseball
in the United
States is called the World Series. The games are played
between the
champions of the American League and the National League,
alternating in the
teams' home stadiums. The winner in four out of seven games
becomes
the world champion team.
The first World Series was held in 1903, when the Boston team
of the
American League defeated the Pittsburgh team of the National
League.
There was no game in 1904, but the series has been an annual
event since
1905--even in wartime. When the number of teams was expanded
in both
leagues in the early 1960s, each league was divided into two
regional divisions,
and a playoff series between the winners of each league
division was inserted
between the end of the regular season and the World Series.
These playoffs,
originally five games but now seven, were needed to determine
the league championships."
